General Definition

Nonduality is the philosophical view that ultimate reality is not fundamentally divided into subject and object, self and world, or mind and matter. The diversity of appearances is not denied but understood as the expression of a deeper unity. The concept appears in several Indian philosophical traditions, most notably Advaita Vedānta and Nondual Kashmir Śaivism, where it is interpreted in distinct ways.

Meaning in Kashmir Śaivism

In Nondual Kashmir Śaivism, Nonduality does not mean dissolving the world into an abstract absolute. Rather, the entire manifest universe is understood as the direct expression of universal consciousness.

This supreme consciousness—Śiva—is never separate from its creative power, Śakti. They are not two independent principles but two inseparable aspects of the same reality. Consequently, the world is not regarded as illusion but as the living self-revelation of consciousness.

Nonduality therefore does not deny difference; it reveals the common source from which all differences arise. Spiritual realization consists not in reaching another reality but in recognizing the unity that has always been present. This recognition lies at the heart of the Pratyabhijñā tradition.

Meaning within jahdara

For jahdara, Nonduality is not a religious doctrine but a fundamental way of approaching art, perception, and reality.

Many apparent oppositions lose their absolute character. Image and language, thought and creation, architecture and illustration, the visible and the invisible, artist and viewer are understood not as separate domains but as different expressions of the same creative whole.

This perspective shapes the entire working method of jahdara. Works are not intended to eliminate opposites but to reveal their deeper unity. Meaning arises not on one side of a relationship but within the relationship itself.

The same principle applies to the authorial identity. Thought, action, and creation are not separate activities but gradually become one language.

For jahdara, Nonduality therefore describes not a state beyond the world but another way of seeing the world.
