General Definition

Reality refers to the totality of what truly exists or is experienced. In philosophy, science, and everyday language, the concept is understood in different ways. It may refer to the objective nature of the world as well as to the subjective reality experienced by each individual. Whether reality exists independently of consciousness or is constituted through perception and interpretation is one of philosophy’s fundamental questions.

Meaning within jahdara

For jahdara, Reality is not a fixed entity that can be fully known independently of human experience. Every encounter with the world is already shaped by perception, memory, language, and consciousness.

A work therefore does not simply represent reality. It creates an experiential space in which reality can be encountered anew and questioned. Meaning arises neither solely within the work nor solely within the viewer, but through the relationship between the two.

This understanding does not oppose reality to imagination. Inner images, memories, dreams, and philosophical reflections all belong to the human experience of reality. The visible and the invisible together form the field in which meaning unfolds.

For jahdara, the purpose of art is therefore not to explain or reproduce reality. Art creates situations in which reality can be experienced more consciously.

Every work changes not the world itself, but the way we encounter it.
