General Definition

Spanda is one of the central concepts of nondual Kashmir Śaivism. It refers to the primordial pulsation of consciousness from which all experience and manifestation arise. It does not describe a physical vibration but the dynamic self-movement of absolute consciousness. Within Spanda, stillness and movement are not opposites but inseparable aspects of the same reality.

Meaning in Kashmir Śaivism

In Kashmir Śaivism, Spanda denotes the eternal creative pulsation of Śiva. Absolute consciousness remains perfect and unchanging in its essence while freely manifesting the entire universe. Every perception, thought, and action is an expression of this living movement. The Spanda Kārikās teach that liberation comes through directly recognizing this ever-present pulsation.

Meaning within jahdara

For jahdara, Spanda describes the creative origin of every act of design. No work emerges from a static condition but from an inner movement in which perception, thought, and form continuously interact.

This movement does not end once a work is completed. It continues in the encounter between the work and its viewer, where meaning arises as a living resonance rather than as a fixed message.

Every work therefore represents a visible moment within an ongoing creative movement.
