General Definition

Prakāśa literally means “light,” “luminosity,” or “illumination.” In philosophy, it does not refer to physical light but to the self-luminous nature of consciousness—the fundamental capacity through which anything can appear, be known, or be experienced.

Meaning in Kashmir Śaivism

In Nondual Kashmir Śaivism, Prakāśa denotes the self-luminous nature of absolute consciousness (Śiva). Consciousness requires no other light in order to know itself or the world. It is itself the light through which every experience becomes possible.

Prakāśa is therefore not merely a quality of consciousness but its essential nature. Thoughts, feelings, memories, perceptions, space, time, and matter all appear within this light of awareness.

By itself, however, Prakāśa would remain pure luminosity without self-awareness. Together with Vimarśa, the reflective self-awareness of consciousness, it becomes capable of recognizing and expressing itself creatively. For this reason, Prakāśa and Vimarśa are inseparable.

Meaning within jahdara

For jahdara, Prakāśa represents the inner clarity from which creation emerges.

A work does not begin with technical skill but with the gradual appearance of something seeking to become visible. Design begins with a quality of attention in which ideas, perceptions, and relationships slowly come into the light.

The light described by Prakāśa is therefore not external. It is the capacity of consciousness to allow reality itself to appear. Every drawing, essay, and Graphic Novel unfolds within this light while attempting to make it experientially tangible.

For jahdara, Prakāśa is therefore the precondition of all creative work. Before form can arise, something must first become visible.
